The Journey

Joby’s career began with a part-time role behind the bar at a local theatre, where he developed vital interpersonal skills and learned to navigate diverse personalities. This foundational experience laid the groundwork for his career, emphasising the importance of teamwork and effective communication.

Reflecting on his early career, Joby recalls a pivotal moment when he took on an AV technician role for a large-scale project at Tateside. This position required him to lead a high-stakes initiative in an area where he had limited experience. With a steep learning curve, Joby viewed this challenge as a growth opportunity.

He rapidly developed the necessary expertise by creating a structured plan to enhance his skills, enrolling in relevant courses, and seeking mentorship. This dedication, coupled with hands-on practice and self-study, enabled him to complete the project, earning positive recognition from leadership and contributing significantly to the company’s objectives.

When asked about his standout achievement, Joby mentioned managing a high-profile project under intense pressure, adhering to strict weekly deadlines imposed by regulatory requirements. Through effective coordination of a cross-functional team and close communication with stakeholders, he navigated unexpected challenges to deliver the project on time, demonstrating his ability to perform under pressure and the importance of strong stakeholder management.

Innovation and creativity

Over the past year, Joby has been pivotal in introducing “Tateside Labs,” a dynamic mini-series focused on exploring innovative and experiential aspects of AV technology. This initiative reflects Tateside’s “out-of-the-box” applications of AV tech, showcasing how standard hardware can be transformed into bespoke solutions. The series, shared both online and internally, serves as a valuable resource for educating a broader audience about the exciting possibilities within the AV industry.

But not to stop there, Joby has been instrumental in organising our networking events called Lateside. These gatherings aim to connect distributors, integrators, and end users, all united by a shared passion for AV. Held at our headquarters, these events feature industry DJs, creating an enjoyable atmosphere that has increased attendance and valuable networking opportunities, resulting in numerous collaborative projects.

Joby has also produced the company’s social media videos for platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and LinkedIn over the past three years. With a steady monthly viewership of around 2,000 on YouTube, the most popular video, focusing on Extended Reality technology, has garnered nearly 80,000 views!

The AV industry

Looking ahead, Joby envisions a future for the AV industry that prioritises sustainability and eco-friendly practices. He advocates for a collective shift towards environmentally responsible production methods, including reducing single-use plastics and implementing energy-efficient technologies. Tateside is committed to integrating these principles into its projects, such as automating equipment to minimise power consumption when not in use.

To attract more young talent into the AV sector, Joby suggests emphasising the innovative facets of the industry, such as virtual and augmented reality, 3D audio, and immersive experiences. By showcasing various career paths, from sound engineering to project management, and sharing success stories of industry veterans who began in entry-level roles, the AV sector can inspire the next generation to explore long-term careers in this dynamic field.
