The Challenge

Integrating advanced technologies for AV Installation is crucial. Although much of the audio equipment had already been installed, the existing projection, media playback and control systems were not delivering the reliable, integrated experience the client required.

Tateside joined the project after earlier attempts had fallen short of expectations, with the challenge centred on bringing multiple technologies together into one dependable, easy-to-operate system. Every element of the presentation needed to perform flawlessly, allowing sales staff to focus on their guests rather than the technology behind the scenes.

As Jonny Faint, Project Manager at Tateside, explains, “Creating a successful system involved much more than installing the projectors. We were delivering a fully sequenced storytelling environment designed to help prospective buyers picture the development and the experience of living there.”

Selecting the right projectors is vital for a successful AV Installation. Reliability was critical, as every presentation forms part of the customer’s first impression of the development. The solution also needed to simplify operation for staff while supporting complex projection mapping, synchronised audio playback and automated room functions.

Tateside’s Solution

Working closely with the client and technology partners, Tateside designed a bespoke show-control system centred around QLab, integrating projection, audio, touchscreen control and room automation into one intuitive platform.

QLab plays a key role in the efficiency of AV Installation. By engineering the entire system as a single coordinated experience, the team transformed a collection of individual technologies into an immersive storytelling environment that operates with exceptional reliability.

Multi-Projector Immersive Experience

The transition between spaces is enhanced through our AV Installation. Five Epson EB-L210SF short-throw laser projectors were installed to create an immersive visual experience across three walls and the floor.

Projector positioning was a critical part of the installation, requiring precise alignment to achieve accurate geometry and image blending. On the main wall, two projectors were carefully calibrated so their outputs merged seamlessly into a single continuous image, creating a visually immersive environment without visible transitions.

To maintain the clean aesthetic of the room, Tateside also designed custom projector shrouds that discreetly conceal the white projectors within the darker interior. The bespoke covers maintain adequate ventilation while helping to protect the carefully aligned projectors from accidental movement that could affect image calibration.

Intelligent Show Control with QLab

Thorough testing ensures reliability in our AV Installation projects. Post-installation performance of AV Installation is crucial for client satisfaction.

At the heart of the installation is a Mac Studio running QLab, providing complete control over the immersive presentation. To accommodate the additional video output required for the floor projection, Tateside incorporated an NDI encoder, enabling all five projector feeds to be managed from a single playback platform.

“QLab is widely used in theatre and live events because it is extremely flexible when managing multiple cues and outputs,” explains Jonny. “It was ideally suited to an experience where the video, audio and room controls all needed to work together.”

The Mac Studio also integrates with the room’s existing audio system, allowing the installed loudspeakers, amplifiers and DSP to remain in place while becoming part of the new coordinated presentation.

Simple Control Behind a Complex System

Despite the sophisticated technology operating behind the scenes, simplicity for the end user remained a key objective.

An OpenAVC touchscreen control interface provides staff with straightforward operation of the entire room, including presentation playback and selection of an independent HDMI source when required.

The interface communicates via a Raspberry Pi running the OpenAVC control platform, which links the touchscreen with QLab and the wider AV system. This allows every stage of the visitor experience to be launched from a single command, removing unnecessary complexity for the sales team.

Automated Customer Journey

One of the installation’s most distinctive features is the automated transition between spaces. As the presentation concludes, QLab sends a command to a WebRelay controller connected to a concealed automated door, which opens at precisely the right moment to reveal the next stage of the customer journey and guide visitors into the spa area.

“There is a lot happening in the background, but the staff experience is very simple,” says Jonny. “They simply press ‘Run Show’ and the pre-configured QLab programme takes care of itself.”

The result is a carefully choreographed experience that feels seamless to visitors while requiring minimal interaction from staff.

Thorough Testing for Reliable Performance

To minimise disruption during installation, Tateside built and tested the complete system offsite before deployment. This approach enabled the team to identify and resolve communications and integration issues well in advance of arriving on site. Close collaboration with OpenAVC, including support with bespoke driver development, ensured the system was fully refined before installation and could be commissioned within the project’s demanding programme.

The Result

The effectiveness of the new system was demonstrated almost immediately after installation, when a member of the sales team unexpectedly arrived with prospective buyers before the project had been formally signed off.

With little time to prepare, the Tateside team launched the presentation and watched as every element performed exactly as intended. Video remained perfectly synchronised across all five projectors, the audio system operated flawlessly and the concealed door opened at precisely the right moment, delivering the immersive experience exactly as designed.

“We had only just finished the system, so pressing ‘Run Show’ for a real visitor was a slightly nerve-racking moment,” recalls Jonny. “Everything worked exactly as intended, from the projection and audio through to the final door opening. It was a real moment of satisfaction and a great demonstration of what the space could deliver.”

With the core AV installation now delivering the intended visitor experience, Tateside will continue to support the project as its final phases are completed, including integration of the lighting control system and installation of the bespoke projector shrouds.

By combining advanced projection engineering, QLab show control, networked automation and intuitive user interfaces, Tateside has transformed an ambitious technical concept into a dependable, immersive sales experience that can be launched with a single touch.

“Multi-projector installations are always interesting, and this project allowed us to expand our capabilities in QLab programming and multi-output show control,” concludes Jonny. “Working closely with OpenAVC was also a key part of the process. There was a great deal of collaboration involved in bringing all the different elements together and delivering a dependable system.”
